Database on Pesticides Use
The Statistics Division of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations started the collection of data on consumption of major individual pesticides products about three decades ago. However, the response to the related Pesticides Use Annual Questionnaire sent to all member countries was not very encouraging. Therefore, in 1986 in co-operation with the Commission of the European Union, a study was undertaken to find ways to improve the country coverage of the data. The present work of collecting data on groups of pesticides is a result of the recommendations of this study. Data collected earlier have been published in various issues of the Production Yearbook. The present database refers to the quantity of pesticides used in or sold to the agricultural sector for crops and seeds; data are expressed in metric tons of active ingredients. Information on quantities applied to single crops is not available.
Description of Elements
Use (tonnes of active ingredients)
This refers to quantities of pesticides applied to crops and seeds in the agriculture sector. Figures are expressed in metric tons of active ingredients. However, due to some country reporting practices, the data may be reported by: use in formulated product; sales; distribution or imports for use in the agricultural sector. In these cases it is specified in the country notes.
Note regarding the selected parameters:
The greater sign after World "World >" implies that the extraction information is requested for the countries available in the database.
In the case of item selection, for example, "Insecticides +" the plus sign indicates that the extraction is requesting information on the aggregate only for each main category (Insecticides, Mineral oils, Herbicides, Fungicides, Seed treatments Insecticides, Seed treatments Fungicides, Plant growth regulators and Rodenticides). This option does not provide the detailed break-down.
In the case of item selection, for example, "Insecticides >" the greater sign indicates that the extraction is requesting information on the detailed break-down for each main category (Insecticides, Herbicides, Fungicides, Seed treatments Insecticides, Seed treatments Fungicides, Plant growth regulators and Rodenticides) excluding the aggregated figures. Please, note that some countries did not report breakdown for some items.
General Notes
Show more / Hide
In 2000 the pesticide consumption questionnaire was revised to obtain information on two new categories: "Seed Treatments - Fungicides" and "Seed Treatment - Insecticides". As a consequence, the category "Fungicides, Bactericides and Seed Treatment" has changed to include only "Fungicides and Bactericides".

LIMITATIONS OF THE DATABASE
A strict inter-country comparison on the basis of the database is not feasible because:
The country coverage and time series are incomplete due to a high rate of non-response.
Although countries have been requested to report data in terms of active ingredients, some countries may have reported in formulation weight (including diluents and adjuvants) without specific indication.
