LAND USE DATABASE - Country Notes

American Samoa:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Australia:
“Agricultural area” refers to total area of all agricultural establishments (farms); “Temporary crops” refers to all crops both temporary and permanent; “Temporary crops irrigated” refers to all crops both temporary and permanent that are irrigated.

Bulgaria:
starting in 1998, Bulgaria adopted a different methodology for the calculation of the land use data than that previously used.
Starting in 2004, data relating to “Country area”, “Land area” and “Inland water” have been revised due to different sources and definitions.

Canada:
data relating to “Permanent Crops” is largely the area on farms that is covered by “Forest and Woodland”: whereas, the area used to cultivate fruit and fibre crops, which is less than one percent of the land in crops is included in the “Arable Land” category.

China:
due to the revised statistical methodology for area measurement there has been an increase in the “Arable land” land figures starting from the year 1999.

Costa Rica:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Croatia:
starting in 1996 the "Arable land" figures exclude non-cultivated arable land; the "Permanent meadows and pastures" figures exclude state-owned land not currently used for agricultural production.

Czechoslovakia:
starting in 1993, the independent Czech Republic and Slovak Republic are shown separately. Data on "Forest area" (for the years 1990-1991) have been calculated by adding the "Forest area" of each country. Individual country data on "Forest area" are available in the FAO publication "Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005", (FRA 2005) at www.fao.org/forestry/fra2005.

Cyprus:
as a result of the present situation in Cyprus, data refer to the government controlled area only, except for total country area where data refer to all Cyprus.

Dominican Republic:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Estonia:
in the years prior to 2003, the area under "Permanent pastures" excludes the grassland area cultivated for more than 5 years.

Ethiopia PDR:
starting in 1993 the independent Eritrea and Ethiopia are shown separately. Data on "Forest area" (for the years 1990-1992) have been calculated by adding the "Forest area" of each country. Finland:
starting in 2000 the "Permanent Pastures" category refers only to in-use natural meadows and grazing land.

Gabon:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Gambia:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Greenland:
"Country area" refers to area free from ice.

Guinea-Bissau:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Iran, Islamic Rep. of:
data relating to "Permanent meadows and pastures" refer to area of "good" and "fair" condition rangeland, thus excluding "poor" condition rangeland.

Israel:
data relating to "Country area" and "Land area" include the Golan Heights.

Japan:
starting in 2001 data relating to "Permanent meadows and pastures" are classified under the category "Temporary meadows" and therefore included under the category "Arable land".

Latvia:
starting in 1995, land use statistics have been re-calculated by excluding the unutilized agricultural area.

Micronesia Fed. States of:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

New Zealand:
"Land area" category actually refers to the total area of the country, as the area of "Inland waters" is not available; "Arable land" category includes other land in farms; "Permanent crops" category includes area of planted production forest; "Permanent meadows and pastures" category includes fallow land and arable fodder.

Pacific Islands:
starting in 1995 data for the Republic of the Marshall Islands, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, the Federated States of Micronesia and the Republic of Palau are shown separately. Data on "Forest area" (for the years 1990-1994) have been calculated by adding the "Forest area" of each trust territory. Individual country data on "Forest area" are available in the FAO publication, "Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005" (FRA 2005) at www.fao.org/forestry/fra2005.

Palau:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Paraguay:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Poland:
starting in 2002 "Agricultural land" consists of only the land area covered within the agricultural holdings.

Puerto Rico:
starting in 1998, "Arable land" includes the area under "Fallow land". Prior to 1998, "Fallow land" is included under the "Permanent meadows and pastures".

Russian Federation:
data on "Country area" exclude the portion of land under the White Sea and the Azov Sea.

Saint Helena:
data for Saint Helena include those for Ascension and Tristan da Cunha.

Serbia and Montenegro:
for the period 1999 - 2005, the land use categories, other than Country area and Land area, exclude figures for Kosovo and Metohia.

Solomon Islands:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Swaziland:
due to the use of different data sources and overlaps in definitions and classifications, the sum of individual land use category data may exceed "total land area". Examples of such instances include forest and agriculture land with tree cover - such as rubber plantations, permanent tree crops, range land and agro-forestry and shifting cultivation areas.

Tanzania:
the "Permanent meadows and pastures" category only refers to the area suitable for livestock grazing (not infested with tsetse fly).

Ukraine:
data on "Country area" exclude the portion of land under the Azov Sea.

USSR:
data on "Country area" include the White Sea (9 million hectares) and the Azov Sea (3.73 million hectares). Starting in 1992, the independent republics Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan are shown separately in Asia, while Belarus, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, the Russian Federation and Ukraine are shown separately in Europe. Data on "Forest area" (for the years 1990-1991) have been calculated by adding the "Forest area" of each independent republic. Individual country data on "Forest area" are available in the FAO publication, "Global Forest Resources Assessment 2005", (FRA 2005) at www.fao.org/forestry/fra2005.

Yugoslavia SFR:
starting in 1992, the independent republics Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia and Slovenia are shown separately. Data on "Forest area" (for the years 1990-1991) have been calculated by adding the "Forest area" of each independent republic.
